Career change to real estate in Sydney, Newcastle and the Central Coast: How to make the transition successfully

Thinking about changing careers? If you're looking for a role that combines people skills, problem-solving and the opportunity to grow your income, a career in real estate could be the fresh start you're looking for.

Whether you're leaving retail, banking, hospitality, administration or another customer-focused industry, many of the skills you've already developed are highly valued by real estate employers.

Why choose a career in real estate?
The NSW property market offers a diverse range of career opportunities beyond residential sales. In my real estate career I’ve done everything from reception, sales, admin, team management and marketing, all the way through to business development and now, real estate recruitment. Depending on your interests and strengths, you could pursue roles in property management, leasing, business development, administration, marketing or commercial property.

Many people are attracted to real estate because it offers:

  • Opportunities for career progression
  • Variety and no two days being the same
  • Performance-based earning potential
  • The chance to build long-term client relationships
  • A dynamic, people-focused working environment

Your existing skills could be your biggest advantage
One of the biggest misconceptions is that you need previous real estate experience to get started. In reality, many agencies actively recruit candidates with transferable skills, and I’ve successfully placed candidates with diverse backgrounds and expertise who are now enjoying successful real estate careers in Sydney, Newcastle and the NSW Central Coast.

You may already have experience in:

  • Customer service and relationship management
  • Sales and negotiation
  • Administration and organisation
  • Time management and multitasking
  • Communication and problem-solving
These skills are highly transferable to real estate and can help you stand out when applying for transitional roles.
And as an example of a truly giant and successful career leap, listen to our podcast interview with Louise Barton, who made the most of her transferable skills as a dental nurse on the way to becoming North Sydney’s #1 Agent.

Get the right qualification
To work in real estate in NSW, you'll need to complete the required Assistant Agent course to obtain a NSW Certificate of Registration.

Many career changers choose to study while continuing in their current job, with flexible online and part-time courses making the transition more manageable. You can research training opportunities for this course at TAFE NSW, Think Real Estate, REINSW, Under The Hammer and Real Estate Academy Australia
Once qualified, you'll be eligible to apply for a range of real estate positions throughout NSW.

Consider starting in an entry-level role
You don't have to become a sales agent or property manager on day one. Many successful real estate professionals begin their careers as:

  • Sales associates
  • Property management assistants
  • Leasing consultants
  • Real estate administrators
  • Receptionists

These positions provide valuable industry experience while allowing you to develop your knowledge and confidence.

Tailor your resume for real estate
If you're changing careers, your resume should focus less on previous job titles and more on the skills and achievements that are relevant to real estate.

Highlight examples of:

  • Building strong client relationships
  • Meeting sales or service targets
  • Managing competing priorities
  • Solving customer problems
  • Working in fast-paced environments

Employers are often more interested in your attitude, motivation and potential than direct industry experience. And here’s a bonus from Recruit & Consult: my team and I are offering you a complimentary Resume Health Check, to ensure that your resume will stand out when you apply for your first real estate role.
