Everyday performance management

Leading and managing a team is something that must be carried out every day. From the moment you step foot in the door you need to be switched on and be leading by example. You should be observing behavior, output and attitude each and every day not just in your 1 on 1 catch ups. To effectively manage people, every leader should be aware of the expectations of them and what their team requires from them to perform.

It is important to communicate openly and honestly with your team on a consistent basis. This will ensure your expectations are clear, they know the direction in which the business is moving, what they need to improve on and where they fit in the team now and in the future.

Every day performance management should include:

  • Acknowledgement of staff – a thank you and a pat on the back can go far
  • Have an open door policy, listen first and problem solve second
  • If you say you’re going to do something, do it!
  • Be transparent and open about the good and bad times, it will create a sense of team and an “all in it together” mentality
  • Be clear about your expectations and minimum standards
  • Drive accountability but setting deadlines and desired outcomes
  • Ensure your behavior and attitude mirrors what you expect of the team
  • Ask open questions to gather hidden information
